I am currently using a surfboard modem and Linksys 1900 Wireless AC Router. I have been downloading files from my remote server for a couple days now and the speed deteriorated significantly over time to the point where I was getting 1/5th of my advertised network speeds. I contacted my service provider and they said everything looked fine on their end and to restart. After restarting my modem my internet speed was suddenly fast again.I asked them if they throttled downloads and they said that they only throttled bittorrent connections which I am not using. The only conclusion I could come to was that the modem or router was overheating. The modem and router are both too hot to touch after spending long times downloading. I'm amazed the plastic isn't melting right off. Is this an issue that anyone has encountered before. Anyone aware of how to mitigate this issue or any hardware that can handle high speed continuous downloads for many days or weeks at a time?

Slap a fan on it. See if it helps. If it does then you found your problem.

Make sure the vents are clear and not being blocked off.

I have a Motorola SB6141. I checked it for heat output, mine does not get that hot. Though it is warm. If yours is like mine, you should have vents on 2 sides. Try standing it up instead of laying it flat if you have not done so. Also, Id have to concur with @Pauleh, maybe adding some active cooling could help.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
