Hi Guys,

I want to upgrade my current rig, I build myself 6 years ago (see list below). I upgrade a monitor last year to a 144 Hz one(no G sync), and lately I have been seeing some weird screen tearing (not much, but it worries me). I was thinking about upgrading my GPU to a GTX 1070, but I don’t know if the rest of my current rig can handle that. If my whole rig needs an update in order to run a 1070 without any problems or roadblocks, my budget would be around 1000 euro’s(GPU included). I live in the Netherlands, but I don’t mind buying things from german site’s. I would like to keep the costs as low as possible, so I would like to reuse as many parts as I can.

My current PC

Case: bitfenix shinobi (white) + 2 case fans

Cpu:  Intel i5-4430 (3.00 GHz)

Cpu-Cooler: Scythe Mugen 4 ( don’t know why I have it but I probably thought it was cool J)

Gpu: MSI R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC (Overclocked: Core Voltage 1200 mV, Core Clock 1100 MHz, Memory Clock 1400 MHz)

Motherboard: MSI B85-G41 PC Mate

Psu: XFX 550W Pro

Memory: 8 GB ddr3 (don’t know the brand)

Storage: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120 GB

                Seagate Barracuda 1 TB (st1000dm003-9yn162)

Monitors: AOC 2460G5

                And an older benQ G2220HD

Not the whole thing to run a 1070, but your i5 would bottleneck it a bit. CPU upgrade to like a 1231v3 wouldn't be bad. PSU not necessary, just check to see if you have the connectors for it.

will the bottleneck be really noticable when im gaming. like can i wait a year, for a bigger budget and get a better cpu and go to ddr4 memory? im not using this rig to edit, i only use it to game, im not playing that much new heavy titles, manly csgo.

If just CSGO, no not really. That being said, if that's what you're mainly playing, you in no way need the 1070.

i know but i want to be able to play new titles when they launch, and i want to be future proof for my GPU.

If you upgrade the CPU to something like an Intel Skylake processor (i5-6400-6700) it shouldn't bottleneck, or not nearly as much as your current one. Or a Xeon, I don't know any particular models though.

If you game on a 144hz monitor, then it might do you good to grab a card like a 1070 or a 1060, the tear on your screen might be attributed to your current one. Or perhaps you don't have anti aliasing on when you play (although it is like a massive hit to FPS)]

Future proofing: you can't particularly do this well... Although if you upgrade every year, if  you wanna go with mid-tier stuff such as a 980 or a 1060 (Care to disagree about "mid tier") You just want your pc to have the availability to upgrade easily without having to replace much else.
