Hey there,

The other day I did a routine maintenance on a PC I didn't build (clean dust, new thermal compound, etc) and now when I turn it on it crashes on the Windows 7 start up logo.

I've tried system repairs but they all say It can't be fixed, and when you scroll though the checks everything passes the only error that pops up says: "Root cause found: A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting". I do not believe any hardware was damaged as the PC does post and I've done trouble shooting by removing bits and rebooting but none of that works. Can't get into safety mode either and system repair with disk doesn't work.

The only thing I can think is that the version of windows is OEM and where its been unplugged and plunged it may think it's a new motherboard, hence the failed start of windows? (I doubt this but only thing I can think of)

Any help is very much appreciated.

Have you tested all cables, maybe mounted RAM again? I don't think it would be about new mobo. It would still boot into desktop and whine about activation. The fact that you can't boot into safe mode says its hardware more likely. Can you try with live Linux from USB or optical?

yep tried all the cables, boots into Ubuntu fine. On another system repair it said it was driver related so i'm pretty certain at this point otherwise it wouldn't boot into ubuntu...  I did manage to get into Command Prompt on the System Repair disk and followed the guide on https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/927525 to get to the drivers at start up even though that said that started all fine I still went though with the whole process and that still failed. Other root causes have said: "Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully" even though it crashes.. :/

If this is prebuild system, can you get it to builder for checking things? I'm kinda out of ideas where it seems to be error in drive/OS but can't be fixed with normal ways. I've seen this type of thing once. Then it went all the way to desktop before crashing. Only option was to do clean install. It was some software which had installed virtual drivers or done some modifications to reigstery etc. Basicly same as what virus would do.
