how big is the performance difference between the most expensive and the most affordable 1070?

I am going to buy new GPU at some point, but I want to check if there is any major difference in performance.

It's all up to the lottery. So long as the cooling system is decent (so no mini or blower cards), any model can be a top or bottom overclocker, it's pure luck with pascal.

But to help you decide, here's how you chose pascal cards. Out of all your options:

  1. Throw away any blower style and single fan cards. Keep only dual / triple fans and hybrids.
  2. Throw away the ones you don't like the color scheme. For example, I don't like black and red, so the MSI Gaming ones would be immediately out for me. Keep only the ones you find aesthetically pleasing.
  3. Sort them by price.

Pick the first one that shows up. Or pay a bit more if you REALLY like the looks of a more expensive card. Outside of that, not really much of a difference between them.

There is no major difference if you are willing to overclock. If you want just out of the box experience then yes the most expensive 1070 variant will most likely perform better, and even then it's not that much better. We are talking about 5-6fps here...
