Hello,

Recently I've encountered some storage issues with large files. Basically, I need a media server. I have no idea what parts would be right for it, but I am going to run LimeTech's UnRAID. Please help me out in finding parts for a 10TB Media Server.

Thanks

We need an idea for what other requirements you have.  Rackmount?  Desktop?  Redundant power supply?  Network requirements?  What other software (besides UnRAID) would you want to run on it?  etc.

Preferably Desktop and 4 Gb/s is fine what do you mean by other than UnRAID its a nas program in itself is it not? (FreeNAS is fine if that is what you mean. It's its own dedicated server.)

 nonredundant is fine.

For instance, my media server runs Plex and a dedicated rTorrent client.  Surely FreeNAS/UnRAID supports plugins to run other things.  Just dropping in ideas before you shoehorn yourself into a rig.

Are there any specific tasks you plan on accomplishing other than storing and transmitting files?

If you use Plex or Emby, you'll need a more powerful CPU to do transcoding.  If you use Kodi...not so much.  I transcode everything on my desktop before uploading it to keep a uniform file format for my Raspberry Pis, which in turn story their library metadata in a shared MySQL database on my NAS.

Once you know exactly how you want everything to fit together, THEN you can figure out what you need to make that distributed system work.

acquire -> format -> store -> organize -> retrieve -> display

There are many ways to go about those steps, but other than the acquiring, they tend to be somewhat interconnected.

Oh ok thanks. Just plan one out like i said. Nothing special. It's legit only going to be a NAS maybe a SAN but thats later. 5 to 10 years (If it lasts that long)

I would trans code before most likely. I'm like only putting Office Docs and Picture/Videos files on it so nothing major.

Dell R710 would be the least expensive solution that would also help meet your goals (except it's not a desktop).

I'm looking for a custom solution to be honest. I want to be able to swap parts and have the security of knowing where it came from, if you know what I mean.
