Dynamic disks shown as basic on Win Server2012R2

Hi everyone,

 

I am practicing on Windows Server 2012 R2 since I've never used it anymore.

 

The disks under Disk Management are labeled as basic and yet also appear to be organized in volumes (which would indicate that they are dynamic disks).

 

Any thoughts?

 

Right clicking a disk does not give me the option to convert it into dynamic, and yet under "Type" the discs are labeled as Basic.

Could you supply a screen shot of disk management so we can we what you are seeing. Dynamic disks are rather old tech and don't really get used anymore, unless you have one volume than is spanning multiple disks they won't be dynamic.

I thought basic were old and dynamic were new. You can only do RAID on dynamic disks I thought

how windows server manages storage is....

strange.....

i have used windows server for a long time, even now i have yet to understand how to works

if you can take the data off the drives on another computer, then wipe them on the server, then put the data back on

that should do it, post if you have any problems

Doing software RAID through disk manager is no longer the current way to do it, but yes you are correct dynamic disks are required for that.

 

What you should be using now is Windows Storage Spaces.
