My friend has a crappy prebuilt with a 240W power supply with no GPU connectors. the prebuilt has an intel i5 4460, and no GPU

would it be safe to put this GPU

into the system without going over the PSU's limit?

also, would the crappy prebuilt motherboard be able to handle 75Watts over the PCIe slot without blowing up?

there is only 1 case fan

Mobo should be fine. But I don't trust that PSU.

That's what I was worried about.

do you think that I could switch out the PSU in a prebuilt?

Yes. I'm pretty sure the days of proprietary PSUs are over. You'll need at least 500W if you want to throw in a $300-$400+ video card in there

EDIT: Ah, right, GalacticRuler brings up a good point. If it's an AIO or something, you probably can't swap it out. If it's a standard desktop, you might be able to.

Actually it'd also be handy to know what prebuilt machine this is.

I wouldn't do it, I know you want to save money but that seems like too sketchy of a supply and barely enough power to me,

If you can find one that fits inside is shouldn't be an issue (if it isn't rivited in), the question is what size will fit

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/631048-psu-tier-list-updated/ Tier Breakdown (My understanding)--1 Godly, 2 Great, 3 Good, 4 Average, 5 Meh, 6 Bad, 7 Awful

Depends on whether it's attached to the case. My prebuilt doesn't allow for PSU changes.

Thanks for your replies.

I don't have access to the system right now, but if I cant switch PSUs in the prebuilt, what are the odds that I would be able to put the motherboard from the prebuilt into a new case?

Quite likely. It's virtually impossible to permanently attach a mobo to a case, and it's quite costly, so the companies won't do it.

but is the motherboard a standard size like ATX, or a special size that will only fit in the prebuilt case

Most likely a standard size. You could always measure it.
