Keep 980, Lower Settings.... Because after Xmas..... Directly after.... there will be more USED cards on the market to choose from.

Xmas has more people selling used GPU's when they get their shiny new ones for Xmas.

Deal with 1440p @ Mixed Medium-Ultra settings for a little bit, and then find a bargain when the influx of USED cards come to market after Xmas.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

First of all you can keep the 980. See what framerates it is capable of. I was supprised what my 970 was able to do at 1440p. Then maybe look for a used 980Ti or a 1070 if the performance isn´t what you expected.
