Not to be the 500th post about this, but I'm looking at some advice for a good laptop for work (web design), coding (virtual machines will be needed), and general schoolwork. I've been looking at two in particular that seem to be in the right price/performance range for me.

I'm looking at the Dell XPS 13 and the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14. I had an older Thinkpad Yoga before this and generally was satisfied with (aside from that it only had 4gb of ram) it until it suddenly crapped out a month or two ago. I had a Dell XPS a while back as well (probably around 6 years ago) that served me very well.

Primarily I'm looking for around a 13-15 inch screen, at least 8 gigs of ram, decent battery life, and some decent processing power to handle compiling and dealing with VMs.

Are these decent laptops for my needs? If not, what would be better at around the $1,000 price point? Also I'm trying to stick to Amazon for prime shipping and because I have their card. Thanks.

Xps 13 is your best bet.

Good to know, but what exactly makes it better? I was looking at the two because their specs seemed comparable, but it was significantly more for the XPS and I didn't quite understand why. I wasn't sure if it was the dell name or what...

Um, how many VMs are you trying to run.

Well, I mean, I have classes this semester regarding building an operating system, some python projects, and android development, it's probably gonna be 3 total, but not more than 2 at the same time.

Yea, well then I would still saying getting a quad core is a must, unless you're planning to run VMs off 1 ULV core. Here's what I would do.

Grab this: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i7559-2512BLK-Generation-GeForce/dp/B015PYZ0J6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1472526964&sr=8-3&keywords=6700hq

then grab another 8gb of ram: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-PC3L-12800-SODIMM-204-Pin/dp/B006YG8X9Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472527111&sr=8-1&keywords=ddr3l+8gb

then grab 250/500gb 850evo m2 for boot disc: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-Internal-MZ-N5E250BW/dp/B00TGIVZTW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1472527164&sr=8-2&keywords=m2+850+evo

and use the 1tb sshd that it came with for mass storage.
