Am I a bad person for selling at this price?

Baeger

So my buddy's buying one of my old desktops, I'm offering it to him for 500 GBP and it's about 3 years old, BUT he knows absolutely nothing about PCs and I know a fair bit but I'm no expert, so am I being a bit of a dick for selling it to him at that price or is it reasonably justified? I don't wanna be a bad friend of course but I wanna get my money's worth so I can get a new laptop.

I offered to make some upgrades for him and put up the price to 600gbp but is that enough or even worse?

Specs are below

TLDR; Selling my GORON PC to a buddy at 500gbp, is this too much?

500GBP is pushing it to be honest, I would not pay more than 350 for it given its age and performance. Depending on the power supply and storage solution (do you have an ssd? if so what model and in what capacity?) it may be worth a little more but generally that should be a fair estimate. If you plan on making upgrades, add their cost to the 350 baseline and maybe bump it up by 10-20GBP for your labour, that would be fair.

-on a side note, iirc it's against the rules to have a signature longer than 3 lines - you can show your system specs on your home page

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Power supply is 500w bronze EVGA one, it's brand new unlike the rest of the PC :P

Storage right now is just a 5200rpm HDD but I offered to put a 120gb SSD in there for free

well thanks for a better idea on the price :D I'll say 350 to him and then 400 if he wants a 1.5tb hard drive or something

also, sorry, didn't know that was a rule, I'll fix that now :S

not really anymore because it auto truncates

and OP taking advantage of someone is a horrible thing to do

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Does that still apply now that signatures automatically get truncated?

Well, you could build a comparable system (i5-6500+RX460) for about $570 USD (so probably 600GBP~), and that's with an 80+ bronze PSU. So....

Yeah but it's not like I'm doing it on purpose, I just have no idea how much the parts are worth and that was the first price that popped into my head (taking into consideration the price I paid for it new, the amount of time I've owned it and rough equivalent current gen parts).

That's why I'm asking you guys about this, I don't wanna take advantage of a friend obviously but at the same time I want to get the maximum value I can for this PC

:P

Way I see it the only way to get maximum value IS to take advantage of someone so its one or the other

Eh, Sauron's rough price he gave me seems to be a good compromise :D You are technically right though, I just don't wanna be a complete dick

A 2nd gen cpu computer, I'd say 100-125 GBP is reasonable and 175 GBP is retail store value.

Yeah...no, that's just ridiculous.

A comparable Skylake/Polaris-based system would be 520-550GBP. So 400GBP would be fair.
