CPU Cache Discussion

I recently found this video and I actually found the video quite interesting. If you don't know what CPU cache is it's basically sort of like memory but on a CPU. It also does seem to matter a bit, or at least it did with older CPUs. I am curious to know what your thoughts about CPU cache are though. I barely ever see anyone really talking about it. Gaming performance hasn't seemed to be game changing with better CPU cache on a CPU either. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/athlon-l3-cache,2416-6.html Tom's Hardware has done some testing with CPUs that had no L3 cache and a CPU that had L3 cache. It seems like it can make a decent difference in some games. And just like the video showed, that difference sometimes can be noticeable. Anyways what are your thoughts on CPU cache? Do you think it matters that much? Does it surprise you an quad core CPU like the 6600k for example has less L3 cache than a FX-8300 for example even though the 8300 has 2 megabytes more of L3 cache and is slower if not barely faster than the 6600k in most applications? Also what do you think about buying cache packages or whatever you want to call them I guess and possibly installing them into a motherboard for better performance depending on what you're doing? I found this a bit interesting as well.

For one game devs aren't going to use cache and if they do it will be a lazy way. If someone truly cared and wrote a piece of software properly. First they would be at it for a couple years. Second good luck getting help. Finally it would be crazy efficient and run on potatoes. You can sorta see this with Vulkan. It isn't magical it just utilizes the hardware more and takes more time. If you built a game with extreme management in mind. So using memory properly and cleaning up and making things smaller and so on. You could play GTA V on a 9500 GT. Sadly everything is being built on top of inefficient things that already exist. They are getting better but no where near what it could be. Talk to an electrical engineer or someone who started when computers where just becoming a thing. We had to make everything so efficient because we were running off of vacuum tubes and punch cards!

Yeah the software support isn't really there, it isn't really there for most things though. I considered the video and the game testing done in that not to be very realistic with modern games, I just thought it would be good for discussion though. That and I found the extra CPU cache packages interesting if you want to call them that. I agree though this isn't really going to make that much of a difference either way, this is probably why there aren't many discussions about CPU cache.

Well buying old parts I guess can be a waste. It is kind of cool to me though, always cool to see how far hardware has progressed in my opinion. I also learned something new, CPU cache packages I guess are a thing which is a bit interesting to me.

Same with hard drive cache. We could use it so much more efficiently, if we use it at all...
