Hey guys, I'm gonna start building my PC soon enough, and I need a few questions answered!

  • Okay, first of all I live in India, and all the stuff here is much more expensive than western countries. For example, the i5 6600K is for nearly 20K here(around 300+ dollars) while the same on amazon.com is for like 220 dollars. So should I order from some overseas company like ebay or amazon(Which might include extra delivery and customs charges. Also, the warranty might not be valid here.) or take stuff up from my home market?
  • Let's talk about the processor here. I looked into both Intel and AMD. The top processors which fit my needs and budget are the i5 6600k and AMD FX 8350(I could've gone a bit higher in terms of prices in AMD, but I didn't bother looking further. The only other one I checked out was the FX 8370 which comes with the Wraith cooler, but it was above budget.) Both have comparable clock speeds, and both support overclocking. While the AMD is cheaper, it doesn't support DDR4 memory. SO which one should I go after?
Okay, I just had a look at amazon.com, and the i5 6600K is for 219.99$(3.5GHz), FX 8350 is for 159.99$(4GHz) and the FX 8370(either with the stock fan or wraith cooler) is for 189.99$(4GHz).
    Which do I go after!!!!!!!
  • Let's talk about the Graphics card. I worked a lot to find one enough for my needs. I checked out a few games requirements. Most of the new games need at least 4GB of VRAM, while some need at least 6GB. (I know, I know. I can play most of them at lower graphics etc with poorer GPU.) But almost all of them recommend 8GB of VRAM.
I had a thorough look. I shortlisted the R9 380X(4GB, so I might run crossfire) and the R9 390(8GB, so one is enough). Two 380Xs will deliver more punch than a single 390, but many games still do not support crossfire/SLI. So which thing should I get?
The Gigabyte GV-R938XG1(R9 380X) is for 189.99$, and the Gigabyte GV-R939G1(R9 390) is for 296.94$.(There is another R9 390 for a lesser price, but i would need to pay 70$ extra for delivery and customs.) I think the 390 would be better, what do you guys think?
  • RAM. I thinking of getting a total of 16GB RAM in the PC. Should I go for 4x4GB or 2x8GB?
  • What size of Motherboard should I go for, seeing there are so many!
  • Should I use the CPU cooler which comes with the processor, or buy third party ones??? Also, should I install extra cooling fans in the case for additional cooling?
  • Finally, storage! I will obviously go for a 1TB or 2TB HDD for my primary storage, but should I get a small SSD to be used as the boot drive? Those are expensive af, and I dont think I can squeeze much games in them!

Thank you all for your help!

Go 8 gb's and i5 non k sku! and personally i think 1TB is enough for storage if you go with the locked 6600 and only 8gbs you can try to go for an ssd. And maybe go with a mini ATX case, just like motherboard. And the Intel CPU cooler bundled with the i5 should be enough, since you won't be able to push the CPU anyway!

1.): don't go with amd until zen releases. too power hungry and less performance for the money. I'd recommend go with the i5-6500 unless you really want to oc, then 6600k+z170 mobo

2.): how expensive are the new graphics cards in india? rx480, gtx1060 would be good options @1080p. DOn't go with crossfire/sli, too much hassle

3.): get 2x8GB, leaves room for upgrade.

4.): get a standard ATX Mobo, fits most cases and you get them relatively cheap

5.): If you get the 6600k, you need to buy a cooler because it doesn't come with one. depending on how much you want to oc, you need to get adequate cooling.

6.): SSD as boot drive is always a good idea if you can fit it in your budget. I'd recommend a 250GB SSD, because you can put some games on it and it is most times not even the double price of a 120GB ssd. depending on how much files you have, you should get a 1TB HDD or a 2TB one. But just for gaming, 1TB should be more than enough.

Fellow Indian here. If you want, I can provide cheap links to the parts you want to buy once you confirm them.

CPU: I would suggest not going for the 6600k unless you are going to overclock. Get a 6402P(around 12.5k) or 6500(14.5k) instead. Don't go AMD until Zen.

MoBo and cooler: You will save money on the motherboard, since you can now get an H110 motherboard for around 3-4k instead of spending 11-12k on a z170. Also you wouldn't need a CPU cooler.

About GPU, if you are going to play only at 1080p, 4GB VRAM is decent enough. You can get Sapphire RX 470(4GB) for about 16.5k which is really great for 1080p gaming.

RAM: Definitely 2x8 GB since you are not going to be building x99 and won't have quad channel support anyway.

Storage: Primary get a Kingston UV400 (240GB) for about 4k and a 1TB HDD for slightly lesser.

P.S. The build in my signature cost me 55k INR.

Home PC: i5 6402P | Kingston HyperX 8GBx2 | Gigabyte G1 gaming GTX 1060 | Kingston UV400 240GB | WD blue 1TB Gigabyte H110m-S2 Cooler Master B500 v2

What resolution are you planning to play? Depends on how overpriced the prices are in your local electronic stores.

I haven't looked into monitors yet, but it won't be 4K initially for sure. I'm gonna look into 1080p or 1440p probably!

Okay will go for intel.

The 3GB 1060 is for 18,990, ie 282.84$ and 6GB is for 23,399, ie 348.51$. The rx480 is for 29,499, ie 439.37$.(and these are the cheapest ones!)

Is the R9 390 any good?

Do you recommend water cooling for a beginner?(I might screw it up, though.)

I will get the main storage depending on the cash left. If I think it ain't enough, I can always add more HDDs.

A question, do I need to run something or configure or whatever if I add an HDD later on?

Thanks for all your help!

get better hardware first before watercooling ;)

the 390 is good, but the other ones are better. Probably your best bet is the 6GB 1060, RX 480 is overpriced. What would the 390 cost?

if you using this build for gaming them focus on good gpu and buying k series cpu is not going to help with your budget at all .... overclocking is never worth it in price to performance and especially in india ... because u need a good cpu cooler which is not going to be less than ₹3000 ..... and a z170 motherboard which is not going to be less than 11k.

You will need to pay 37% customs duty + shipping on overseas import. It's better to buy in India. You can buy from mdcomputers or primeABGB if you want them for the cheapest in India.

I live in Mumbai. Got the parts from Lamington road. I heard good things about Nehru place in Delhi too. You should definitely get a trip there. Local shops are usually cheaper than buying online for certain parts.

I got:

Case for 3000. It's a pretty good circle one. Don't remember the name.

H110M for 3000.

RAM for 2750. Just have a single 8GB stick right now. Adding second one in a week or so..

G1 gaming GTX 1060 for 26k. Spent a bit extra on this one because of the backplate and RGB lighting. You can get the zotac mini 1060 for around 22k though.

i5 6402P for about 12k

PSU was about 3k( B500 v.2).

SSD for 4k and HDD for 3.5k

The guy there assembled the build and did the cable management for me. I also got some discount because of the whole build. Overall I'm really happy with my build and performance.

These are approx pricing. The build in total cost me 55k. It runs games pretty solid at 70-80 fps at 1080p ultra. My GPU overclocks nicely too( 2100 MHz on core and 9000 MHz on memory).

About the windows 10 education, you need to have microsoft dreamspark program in your college to get the product key. That can only be availed through there. If you have a friend in IIT or so, you can get him to give you the key and ISO.
