4790k vs 3930k change?

Sooo, the story is that i am building a pc for my brother and i dont wanna exceed a givem budget but i also dont wanna it to be even alittle less powerfull than what i have :)

Right now i am looking and i found the 3930k for around 160$ used (no idea how used). Would it be stupid for me to give my brother the mobo ram and pcu from my build and

"upgrade" myself to 3930k? I have custom watercooling so i could OC the shit out of it :) I might be able to score a Asus x99-S for 150$ if i wanted to.

Usage- gaming , streaming, videoediting.

I have 1200w PSU and will add another r9 290x to it so r9 290x in cf in Corsair 900D.

The question, is 3930k comparable to 4790k when it comes to games, video editing and streaming?

It certainly won't be as good as your 4.8 GHz 4790k in gaming, but it should be pretty close. And it should be better at the other two. It also depends on whether you win the silicon lottery again like your 4790k.

True, from what i have seen the 3930k is capable of 4.6GHz OC so that is almost identical if i hit it :D

In some Apps it will beat the 4790k due to 2c/4t more

But they should be close overall,i would not call it a "upgrade" but rather a "replacement"

X79 Boards are a lot less common, and usually cost more.

found one used for around 100, but who knows :-/

Just to be sure i am pretty sure it wont work, 3930k is not compatible with x99?

No. The 3930K Is based on socket 2011-1 ( Which is also compatible with 4930K etc ) And X99 Has to be on a 2011-3 Socket.

$500 should be enough for an i7 6700  and everything else, if you go for a 6700k it most likely would be over $500 due to it not having a stock cooler, and a z170 board for overclocking.

4790K is faster at least for gaming.

3930K only fits on X79 motherboards.

from a 4790K at 4.8Ghz there isnt realy much worth upgrading from..

Unless you do allot of editing and productivity work.

Then X99 would be a benefit, but basicly only if you jump straight on a 8 core.

The 6 cores will ofc also be a benefit in rendering, but not as much as a 8 core.

Weeks ago i thought about getting the 24 core xeon bcs i found a deal for 1100$ for it so i thought i could do it, but basically i dont do that much editing to benefit from it :D

If you dont do that much editing and rendering, then its not realy gonne benefit you much.

In terms of gaming, since your 4790K reaches 4.8GHz stable, you are pretty much settled there.

The 6700K Skylake ofc has better per core performance and ipc, but the diffrence isnt realy much worth nothing.

Next to that the 6700K might not even reach 4.8GHz thats something you never know in front.

I dont think that upgrading for you is gonne make a whole lot of sense.

Since you are mainly gaming.

X99 is basicly also Haswell / Broadwell, but just the enthusiast line with cpu´s with more cores and pci-e lanes.

The only thing i dont understand anymore is when i bought all my components 2 years ago that was the CHEAPEST they ever were. Even now they are MUCH more expensive like 30% more and you can buy second hand for almost the same price like i bought new ones 2 years ago.... Heck my PSU is a BEAST and you cant get even second hand one for 120$ like i bought the new one....
