If any of the "older" people on here remember the 775 age, what was the best motherboard back then? Or who were the best at mobo's back then? Top of the line, 5 stars, etc. etc.

Though I wasn't into PCs then with the various used builds I have done I find that the ASUS P5Q Deluxe and competitors were good

The nforce series were top of the line back then. Some asus boards were ok too, depending on your cpu and sometimes the revision of your board.

nForce was eh at the time, X48/P45 was better.

nforce if you wanted to SLI

X48 if you wanted to xfire

P45 were somewhat the same as X48 but for single card

P35 was a decent platform if you wanted a cheap/overclocking board

My 680i board is a joke...nVidia had said it supported 45nm Quad but wasn't true later on...
