MSI Z170A KRAIT GAMING - OC bios

Hello guys,

Long time lerker here seeking some advice.

I plan to buy an MSI Z170A Krait Gaming mobo but from what I hear it now comes with an updated bios that no longer allows an OC.

I found someone who uploaded old versions of the bios that allowed an OC, but the files have since been removed and I can't seem to find any other mirrors, only modified bios for non K chip OC.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

I would love one, however it's a white themed build so I am fairly limited. :(

What? if the CPU you plan to use is a K CPU, then it allows for adjusting the multiplier for very easy overclocking on boards that support it, ie in this case a z170 board. If you plan to OC a non-k CPU then that's more complicated as it involves adjusting the BCLCK which is also used for other essentials on the board and can cause instabilities.

From what I have read even if you have a K CPU the new bios is not allowing you to change the CPU multiplier. It seems crazy to me, so I am hoping someone here has purchased the board recently and can confirm if that's true.

If that were true then it would be a bad BIOS and you could return the board as not fit for purpose as it's pretty much the only reason to get a z170 board, either that or flash an earlier BIOS myabe, sure they sometimes have a few extra features but the main purpose people buy them is for overclocking with their K series CPUs.

Er... can you give up on that idea? There are just so many downsides to locked Skylake OCing that it's not really worth doing it. While you can still do it, you'd be better off just buying a 6600k straight.

Look, what CPU are you planning on getting? if it's a K, like 6600K 6700K then it's fine.
