So I want to build a media server or at least I think that's what I want, I want something that I can connect my main PC, phone, tablet, laptop, and everything else to and move files between them on my network but I have no clue how to do that or what I need or even if media server is the proper term for what I want so any help would be nice and much appreciated thanks.

Hey there,

To give you a good answer and to advise you further, we really need to know what kind of budget you have. I assume you want a machine that resides in your home network which allows you to stream your videos and files to your other devices, while having all storage centrally located instead of scattered across many different machines.

Please give us a short rundown of available funds, how much data we're talking about and how much space you have for this machine.

I would like to keep it under $650 if possible but the budget can be flexible and it's going to go in my apartment and I was hoping to fit in in a full tower PC case or smaller and I was shooting for like 10 TB of total storage which should be more than enough to not need upgrading for the foreseeable future since I'm just going to be using it for photos, videos, and other miscellaneous files. Thank you for the help in advance I can build a PC but I have no clue when it comes to this sort of thing. ?

The motherboard supports RAID and has 6 SATA connectors, you will have to use a PCI-E card to accommodate more drives in the future. If you use these 4 drives in RAID 5, you have 9TB of usable space and 1 drive can fail without losing data. Small SSD as a boot drive for whatever software you want to run on it. Power supply is overkill but it's cheap and relatively okay. This won't give you 'over-the-moon' super fast access to the data, but for a home network storage unit, it'll take care of your needs.
