1070 lower performance than expected?

Chris929

First off specs are,

GTX 1070 FE

FX 8350 stock

M5A97

8 GB RAM

250 GB SSD

1TB SSHD

So I recently got my new GTX 1070 the other day as an upgrade from my R9 290, and I was expecting massive gains. I know the 8350 will bottleneck the 1070 to a degree being it is an older lower end CPU, but I seem to have much lower performance than most people I'm seeing online with the same or similar setups (same CPU/GPU). I'm getting in some cases around 50-60fps in BF4 on ultra, and around 45-60fps on GTA 5 maxed out without MSAA. I'm running a 2560x1080 monitor and run my games at that native resolution. Once again I understand the 8350 will be a bottleneck in CPU intensive titles (but come on the 1070 is supposed to edge out a freakin Titan X!), I'm just hoping I could get some feedback and maybe some troubleshooting tips because I'm finding it hard to find any real solutions online, thank you everyone I love you guys!

Sorry m8.... That FX CPU bottlenecks the crap out of the 1070.... Even an i5 bottlenecks it...

You can't expect full gpu usage if you combine a GTX1070 with any FX Cpu.

Main gaming pc: Lian-Li Lancool II Mesh Performance - Ryzen 5 5600X - MSI GTX1080Ti Armor - AMD Wraith Spire RGB - ASUS TUF Gaming B550 Plus - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2x8GB 3200MHz - 500GB M.2 (and a few other drives)

Gaming laptop: ASUS GL552VW: i7 6700HQ - GTX960M 2GB - 8GB DDR4 2166Mhz RAM - 1TB 7200RPM HDD

My recommendation is to save some money and upgrade to an i7....

Preferably one of the following:

  1. 6700K
  2. 4790K
  3. 5820K (and above)
  4. 6800K (and above)

Then you will be able to use the 1070 to its full potential...

I know I won't get full usage, I'm upgrading to a 6th gen i7 soon, but like i said i seem to be getting sub par performance compared to other people with similar setups to me. At this point my 1070 isn't doing much better than my old 290

How much is the performance difference?

You know what that screams?

BOTTLENECK

The 290 was probably bottlenecked as well, so the 1070, even though it's a faster card, can't do better...

Like I said in my OP, I'm getting around 50-60 fps in battlefield 4 maxed out, and around 45-60 fps in GTA V maxed without MSAA, both running at 2560x1080. I'm seeing people getting 90-100 fps in bf4 with similar setups, and in the 80-90s on GTA V

BF4 and GTA V are CPU intensive, so it's even more understandable that you are getting sub par performance in these titles...

Yea like I said I understand my old Cpu will bottleneck my 1070, but the issue is ik seeing like a 20-30 fps Delta compared to others with similar setups. I'm upgrading this holiday season to a 6th gen i7, but for now I'm seeing a big difference in performance between others with 8350/8320 and gtx 1070

Similar setups? You mean people that have 1070s or people that have 1070s with AMD CPUs?

Your CPU is to blame. Lower the settings until until u upgrade to Zen or Intel.

PS. Even worse decision than pairing these two together is buying FE....

Maybe some drivers leftovers causing this issue? Did you use DDU utility to get rid of the drivers properly?

People that have 1070s and similar amd Cpu or exact same CPU. I don't even bother looking at user benchmarks from people with i7s because I would understand a big performance Delta between the two

I only got the FE because it was the only one in stock at (insert tech company) and since I worked there I got a good (undisclosed) discount with made it worth it

I was very excited lol, slowly getting rid of my budget hardware and moving to more master race components LOL

I need to do that too. The 1070 is the last piece to my puzzle.
