Well, first off, if nothing graphically intensive is being done I would NOT use the GPU in a new system, there's no reason to waste the electricity/put extra wear and tear on a GPU that's not needed.

Something like a simple Pentium + 8gb of RAM would be sufficient (and even throwing in a cheap 120gb SSD). Although, I would personally go with an i3-6100 + H110 board + 8gb DDR4 + 120GB SSD as the cost difference isn't that much and an i3 is a much more capable CPU.

Hello everyone!

I  have a question about my old desktop. It is that it crashes a lot. Like I am moving a file, freezes and crashes. This happens when the cpu reaches 100% for more than a few seconds. It has a celeron 450, 3gb of ram, gtx 770, and a evga bronze certified 500w power supply. This always happens. Also this is my little brother's pc, and all he does is watch youtube. He only has chrome and word apps. There are no background applications running, except the system. I have tried: Windows 7, Ubuntu, Windows 10, Windows xp, Lubuntu. It still happens. Cpu-Z tells me that the cpu at 100% is at like 50 degrees celsius. The hard drive is 3 years old. My brother might turn the pc into a nas. It was pre-built in 2007, but was not used at all/very little when we got it. I gave it to my brother in 2013, and since day 1, this problem always happens

Thank You

It's a shitty CPU that can't properly handle Windows 7/10.

But I have tried other os. And it's just a youtube machine, not a gaming beast. All my brother does it watch youtube at 480p for some reason, even though his monitor 1440p.

It's still a shitty CPU. It's a single core weak CPU.

and? I have tried windows xp, with an old version of chrome? It's not really shitty for the time. Intel/amd were starting to make dual core systems

Yet the CPU is pinned at 100% even through multiple different OS installations. Clearly, it's not powerful enough for the kind of work you're using it for. Even older versions of chrome were resource intensive and pushing a 1440p monitor probably doesn't help (even though the GPU handles that it still taxes the CPU more heavily -- at the time that that CPU was around 1440x900 was still the standard).

Buy a used Core2 Duo, any will be better than that Celeron. Even a Quad if the board supports it. I was (occasional and not latest titles) gaming on a Core2 Duo E6750 until a Month or so ago. No point replacing the whole machine if you can get a higher-end C2D for bugger all :)

Edit:

You may find that it's pegged at 100%, but being under-clocked by a faulty board? 775 boards are so cheap now, may be worth replacing the CPU and board.

I have a laptop with a hyper-threaded Prescott P4, and apart from running hot as the centre of the sun, it's quick and reliable. I'd expect a "modern" Celeron to be a quicker chip.
