FreeNAS Uses

So my step dad's company has a small Netgear NAS with 4x2TB drives and is now running out of space. He uses it for backing up files from his main PC and then that is again backed up onto a 2TB external hard drive. Both of these are done daily. 

 

Would this be easy to set up with FreeNAS on a custom built system?

 

I do have some limited experience with FreeNAS using it as an external steam library.

What he means is would a freenas box do the daily backups he described.

Yes, FreeNAS is a great use case for this, obviously dependant on the hardware you choose.

can the unnamed netgear NAS device be flashed with a non netgear OS? i was under the impression he wanted to use as is but replace the OS with FreeNAS.

No I would build a custom system for the new NAS.

oh so you'd be replacing one of the two devices with something you build. You're not looking to re-purpose old hardware. I didn't really see what you were wanting to accomplish.
