Hello, I'm trying to build a computer for around $800.
This is what my friend came up with, should I swap the GTX960 to a EVGA GTX1060 3GB or something different such as saving up for a GTX1070 or is the GTX960/GTX1060 good enough?
I am wanting to run most games in 1080p on the highest graphical setting as well as possibly stream on Twitch.

My friend also says that AMD's are power hungry I kinda want to keep the power bill down if I can.

I can try to save up $100 to $200 more if I should get a better GPU like a GTX1070 or a better processor.

Don't get a 960, for the price + just a little more you can get something more than 2x as powerful.

What would you recommend then? Please also state what brand.

Also would it be bad to go with the 1060 since no SLI?

I need advice not flaming

A gtx 960 is a ripoff and your friend is a flaming fanboy. AMD had 3 GPUs that are faster than the 960 and are cheaper than the one in your build. did he actually show you any math on how much it would cost you in electric bills?

I would recommend getting a GTX 480. It is the best bang for the buck AMD card ATM and when Cryengine updates their systems to support Vulcan it will be very well optimized

Did you mean RX480? If so would it still be better then a 3gb GTX1060 and 6gb GTX1060 or gtx1070?

Whoops lmao, yes I do mean the 480. Yes it would be better than the 6Gb 1060, but if you do have the money get the 1070.

The RX 470 is the best bang for the buck value GPU right now and so is the 6600k.

You could save some cash and opt for a 6500, ditch the cooler for a stock cooler, and an H110 MOBO, but i believe in value and quality over quantity and feel you'll be happier with this setup.

550w is plenty for any single AMD card right now in their current line-up, i don't really recommend SLI or crossfire over a single GPU.

You'll need an OS but idk if you want to use some Linux distro or you already have a key.

If you don't, chalk up an extra $30-ish (for a grey-market key) or $100-ish (for a store-bought key)

I don't think his friend is a fanboy so much as he's thinking of old tech.

Notice how the build list we were given has Haswell parts as well over Skylake (there's no reason to not get Skylake over Haswell right now) And the 200 series of AMD's gpus were power hungry, so i can see someone who's not caught up still thinking that.

in that case, knock off the price for the HDD.

Depends, what kind of refresh-rate do you plan on running?

Also, you may consider more ram if you have the money because I know that lots of applications and games are becoming much more intense on it.

That just shows he's ignorant and that's never an excuse, especially in the age of Google. The 960 never competed with the 200 series either.

I do plan on going to 16 Gb of ram later on, it's just for right now.

Idk who you think you're fooling here but the 960 absolutely ran more efficient than the 285/380 (competing GPU at the time in same price bracket), despite the 285/380 having better performance hahaha

A 1070 is overkill. Trust me I have one and it is way to overpowered for 1080p
