Hello!

I was hoping to get some advice/feedback on a PC build (kinda multi purpose) mainly for some light CAD and FEA work for school, causal gaming, the occasional dabble in music production and streaming.

The build list:

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/TY9sXH

Some other facts:

  • Budget: $1500. (i am a little flexible with this)
  • Location: United States.
  • Peripherals: One monitor, mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse. (open to suggestions/recommendations). Note: I will use one monitor for now, but would like to have the choice for expansion to another monitor in the future.
  • I am upgrading from an 2011 HP pavilion dv-6 laptop.

This is my first time on the forum and my first time building a computer, and I am fairly certain I am probably screwing something up, hence the request for feedback.

Thanks a bunch!

Scrap that thermal paste your H100 should come with one (included pastes are good enough and the difference is minimal). Now, what is the resolution and refresh rate of the monitor will you be gaming on.

All in all not a terrible choice of parts! :P

Here's my suggestion: Smaller physical size build with black on black color scheme, still the i7's calculating power, GTX 1070, SSD/HD combo for big file storage, cheap mechanical keyboard and half decent mouse, quiet case and a nice 27 inch IPS 1440p display. Without the screen you're royally within your budget.

@Castdeath97 Cool. I will go ahead and remove the thermal paste. I was thinking more along the lines of 1080p IPS with 60 Hz? around 24-27 in

@Xineas Thanks for the recommendation man. I don't know about the micro atx boards. I am assuming its just the same as the normal ones, but just smaller and more compact. Are there any other advantages?

Thanks a bunch guys! :)

The 1070 is kinda overkill for 1080p, I would consider 1440p if you can afford it.

Micro ATX boards are just smaller in size. Some people like them, others don't. They usually have less SATA ports, less fan headers and of course less expansion slots. Then again, you don't need many expansion slots when you only use 1 graphics card.

At 27 inches I really do recommend 1440p over 1080p. The screen I linked is one of the cheaper 60Hz IPS 1440p displays at 27 inches.
