If you have high quality speakers you are going to want a high quality sound card for sure.  I remember Linus mentioning that certain motherboards on the high end had some decent onboard sound for better speakers but usually you want to get a sound card instead of onboard audio.

Sound cards are more meant towards headphones, you'll hear almost no difference with sound cards with speakers unless you have a bad DAC.

Does having a soundcard for speakers make sense? not an audio expert

Nope. If on board audio sucks you can just get a cheap DAC: Behringer UCA202 (Note the headphone output is not recommended for use with headphones).

http://sound-cards-review.toptenreviews.com/sound-cards-vs.-onboard-audio.html

"Dedicated sound cards have a number of improved or added features, which in turn produce better sound quality all around. Features like higher signal-to-noise ratios, lower harmonic distortion, 24-bit sample rates, 192-kHz resolutions and of course additional APIs. These additional features are what truly make a dedicated sound card worth the time and money it costs to install them and set them up to work properly. One thing to keep in mind is that you will need a good set of speakers or a nice headset to truly hear the difference."

Other info. pulled from the net from various places ...

"Sound cards can also take the load off the rest of your pc while producing the audio you need."

"Some motherboards on board sound does not have DSP which is something to consider if you are into movies and games.  Realtek does not come with any DSP."

ShearMe I was trying to be helpful in the thread and respond and by quoting sources I was admitting on my own I did not know enough about the subject and had to use sources that provided information on the topic.  Have you heard of learning ShearMe ?  Can you comprehend that not everyone in this world knows everything like you do ok ?

The best stance to take when in a position of ignorance is to remain silent, and learn quietly before saying anything at all. After which you can be helpful by using what you know instead of what someone else knows.

Then don't post anything, if you don't know what you are talking about, don't just link random things from the internet. Would that be fair to you if someone did that to you and you purchased the wrong product and wasted your money?

No one is being passive aggressive here but you, we like to joke around, don't take everything so seriously. But on a serious note, if you don't know what you are talking about, don't say anything.

Well yeah that too.

The points shared in my last post show how a sound card can be useful even if it is just being used with speakers. Simple as that.

Except that while those points might have been true in the past, they no longer hold significance. That was the information in my random Google link, so thanks for taking the time to check it out before exploding at me.

Coincidentally, I have heard of learning and can respect the fact that other people might not be knowledgeable about any given subject, which is why I posted a helpful link. I'm sorry if my attempt at humor struck a nerve.

Already moved on.  Let us just hope that the op gets what they want from their pc experience.
