Hi,

So I'm looking to pick up a Xeon E5, preferrably v3 processor.

I'm not very experienced with computers, but I want one for a stable and powerful workstation. What information about the processor do I need to check to see if it can work well with a consumer grade motherboard?

I would like the consumer friendly features found on your typical "gaming" motherboard - onboard audio, USB 3.0, multiple expansion slots, etc.

If, per se, this specific processor doesn't have compatibility with any consumer grade board, who do I check to make sure that I can find one that is?

I've heard of people frying their CPU chips by putting them in an X99 that was not compatible.

I plan on asking Intel later, but the more information  I can get, the better.

Thanks!

If you want Xeon E5 v3 or v4, then look for X99 chipset boards, they have same LGA2011-3 socket. I have never heard of a case where CPU was fried. Older Xeons, v2 and v1, use LGA2011 socket, which is completely different.

Pretty much all of them support Xeon (but not necessarily ECC RAM), just look at the specifications and CPU compatibility list. Feature-wise, just look them up - USB3, onboard audio and multiple expansion slots are pretty much everywhere, just look at the prices and features. Performance-wise, there is pretty much no difference.

@jj9987 I just looked up a compatibility list. I had no idea they had that stuff available!

That makes everything a lot easier. I appreciate your time gentlemen!

@hislittlecuzin

I'll take a look at that! Thanks for the link.
