Hard drive SATA - L clip crumbled

Fortress

My WD Blue hard drive started acting funny and when I checked the physical drive, the SATA cable was hanging loosely. And when I removed it i saw all the SATA data pains bent and the L clip gone, checking if the plastic for the L clip was inside the SATA cable, it turned out that it was there, and was all crumbly. Is there a way to fix this? And if so, can I still access the data inside?

Get the old stuff off the hard drive connections, plug it in with new cables and hope for the best really. Sounds like the cables you had were cheaply made.

I think he means the connector on the HD is gone, if that is the case and you need the data from that drive, find a PC specialist in your area !

I can do that sort of thing for instance, but I would have to have a similar drive and be able to remove the HD controller board from the drive and replace it with a similar one... and even then I would only recommend you do this in order to get the data off the drive.

Do not keep using the drive in that type of configuration, you're asking for more trouble than it's worth.

Oh haha I misread it. Or you could get a cheap hard drive enclosure that interfaces on USB 3 or thunderbolt. But a picture would really help us see what his issue is, whether the actual connectors on the hard drive are shot or the cables just got messed up.

Hey there Fortress :)

Could you post a photo of the condition of the WD Blue?

If you have valuable data on the drive a data recovery company would be the safest and most certain way of getting your data back. Mind that data recovery companies' services can be costly.

If the SATA port of the drive is broken there's little chance of fixing it. This topic should be of great help. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the help, you guys. I managed to get all of my data off of the drive by flipping the hard drive upside-down and letting gravity take care of the connection between the HDD SATA contacts and the contacts on the cable. I immediately ordered a WD My Passport External HDD and transferred all of the files.

Hey, good to know! I'm happy you managed to save your data. Check if the cable didn't have any tension on the drive from the cable that might have caused this in order to prevent such things from happening in the future. :)
