I have built several of gaming PCs for both myself and friends, but recently have found that my mid grade gaming rig HATES 3d rendering and some art programs while my girlfriend was using it with blender for college projects. As I am planning to build a new rig with this in mind, I would like to know what components of the computer most directly impact performance in art/ 3d applications. I believe that I heard somewhere that single core processors with high clock speeds work better than multi core processors, I could have that mistaken that with another program altogether though. I also heard that multiple gpus are actually good in these work Conditions. Would having the program on ssd or even mvme storage make a worthwhile difference. Does hyper threading make a worth while difference. I'll post my rig below and maby there is some simple thing that I haven't done in blender to make it optimized for my pc, I am using the most current version of blender and have done zero tweaking to the program itself.

 I am running it on:

Amd fx 8320 at 4.0ghz

16 gb of ram 1666? Mhz( sounds right)

Gtx 960 4gb

 

The program itself I believe is on my hard-drive as I have never run into my PC having difficulty running programs, I have space on my boot ssd to ove it and the projects onto for the time being if the process isn't bottlenecked elsewhere. If there are optimization I can make to my PC while saving up to build the dedicated PC that would be great.

if you're using blender head over to sheet it render farm. Run there program to tender other peoples work for points then use there network ti render yours.

 

my 30 second animation for college with my 8350 @ 4.8GHZ would have took 5 hours took 15 mins in sheep it.

 

as for tweaking you will want to change the render size to small squares. I forget the settings it's been time you could also change user preferences to render on your gpu. More cores are definitely better than faster single cores and GPUs are even faster.

Thank you very much for taking time to respond. So having a beefy CPU isn't going to matter and if I were to build a PC with this in mind spending the bulk of my money on a graphics card would be optimal. for cpu, getting a xeon with a large amount of cores with lower clock speeds would be a worthwhile venture ? Or if I'm going with beefy GPU then there is no reason to bother with the CPU

I am pretty sure gpu will be better however cpu renderings time have coke down over the years. I really haven't used blender in a long time.

 

i would go down the cpu route, on the render menu open performance and set the tiles to as small as they will go or for you you want big tiles.
