Strange static problem

Hey guys, I have HD 558's hooked up to a Fiio E10 and whenever I turn up the volume it makes an odd crackle sound that stops when I leave the volume nob alone. But it is also a little tricky to get the sound to balance between both ears properly, I have to adjust the sound a fair bit to make it balance.

 

What do you think this could be ? Time to get a new e10?

This is a known problem with the Fiio E10: a "dirty" volume pot. e.g. when the pot is turned, there is static and variable channel imbalance, especially at low volume knob positions.

 

I think this is "supposed" to be fixed with the updated E10K, so you could get one of those I suppose. You could also get a Micca Origen which is better for slightly more cash.

 

Overall, this is an example of why I am not enthusiastic about sub-$100 DAC and amp combos. They cut too many corners.

Thanks for the advice. This is my second E10 so may I ask what you would recommend that is more pricey, but will last me like 5+ years and is much better quality?

 

I am willing to pay more to spend less in the long run.

I never used mine as portable, is there better desktop versions?

Oh I see.

Will I notice an audio quality different with Micca origen, or is it more things like higher build quality? I have FLAC files for my DAP. Will  Micca origen play them better?

Dunno, I haven't compared them. I will say that I was not impressed by the E10. It sounded pretty much like my motherboard and going to a Schiit stack made an audible change. In particular sub-bass tightened up a bit and things were less shouty.

 

Believe me, just fixing the channel imbalance and static bullshit will be a big improvement in the experience.

Do you even have a coaxial output available?

Guess not. I thought the orange one at the back of my mobo was coaxial, the manual doesnt mention it though. Z87A

Probably best to stick with USB or maybe optical.
