You can go as high as an i7 2600 for a locked mobo. Any 2nd gen i3/5/7 2xxx should work. Check eBay and classifieds.

Looks like they are selling on ebay for $99-$150. Its a 3.3 Quad core with slightly higher single thread rating and turbo speed, not a pad upgrade if you can swing $90. For around $150 you could get an i7 2600 quad core with hyper threading for multitasking.
