A 'gaming laptop' sounds like a giant distraction in university.  You'd be well advised to leave the gaming habit behind for the next 4-5 years, and concentrate on studies, socializing, etc.  There's so much to do at a typical university and surrounding area that spending it gaming is a giant waste of time of your life in which there's so much else to do.

On that note, a friend of mine is a professor who teaches first year electronics engineering technology students.  Who the 'gamers' are is quite visible on the first day of class as they show up with these giant gaming laptops.  His very first lecture to these mostly young people is about time management, and certainly discussing the amount of time spent gaming, instead of studying is a prominent part of the lecture.  He's seen quite a number of people flunk out because they simply can't put the gaming away until they've made adequate progress in their tasks.

You generally don't want a gaming laptop for college as they tend to have poor battery life and are bulky and create huge distractions. I would only get a gaming laptop for college if you plan to hang out with other people that have one after classes assuming you won't need much study time, any free time will probably be mostly weekends when you have your gaming PC anyway.

More about : laptop

Uni student here that just finished first year. Yeah get something built for working. Gaming laptops tend to cut back on portability, cost for performance (much more expensive for a desktop) and battery life and not to mention gaming on a laptop and carrying around a mouse and charger and finding a desk large enough and a relazing place to frantically swing your mouse about and rage quit stuff is not that easy.

Trust me save your money, go on ebay, search for something like "asus i7" and buy an ultrabook for under £300 and put an SSD in it. Its what I did and its worth it
