Is it possible to upgrade a laptop with an i5-6200u cpu?

If so, what socket is it, and which cpus have the same socket?

Most of the time laptop CPUs are soldered to the board. No way of knowing unless you open it up and see for your self, but its probably soldered on

It uses a BGA socket, you are not going to be able to upgrade it.

Ok, thanks for the help, it's a shame that so many laptops cannot be upgraded

Yeah you end up trading upgradability for portability.

Do you know if this is something new, or if it varies between cpus?

I have 2 older pcs, 4 and 6 years old... They both have lga sockets i think, as they can be taken out from the socket. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong about lga.

AMD laptops use PGA CPUs, older intel laptops used PGA aswell. Also alot of higher end laptop have upgradable GPUs if you can source one.

So there are laptops that allow you to swap out mobos?

Yeah, but Pendragon said that they have full upgradability. I would assume this also means the ability to upgrade your Mobo.

My bad, nearly full. I assume you can but I don't think anyone's tried mainly because that would be horribly expensive. CPUs and GPUs for sure. Sometimes CPU socket's don't change and you can carry on using the same mobo. Most 780m laptops MXM can be upgraded with 980ms with a custom bios flash. Don't quote me on that but so far that's what I've seen.

actually there were, MSI GX660 can be upgraded with 2 different mobos with newer gen CPUs but these things are very rare and of course theres no official support for this kind of thing
