So after a month of dealing with high CPU usage from svchost.exe (netsvcs) I decided I would clean, clean, clean reinstall Windows. I went to Microsoft's website and entered my product key, downloaded the ISO, burned it to a DVD, to eliminate the possibility of my old installer disk being scratched (by the way these were brand new DVD's. I took them out of the package and immediately put it in my computer). After burning the ISO to the DVD, I clean wiped Windows. Took like 2 hours to download Windows and 1 hour to install and guess what, when I boot up immediately svchost.exe (netsvcs) starts up again taking 75-100% CPU usage. So I figured it must be a problem that I don't have the latest version of Windows. I go and boot up Windows Update and BAM error code 80072EFE.  So right now I'm basically done with Windows and thinking about going to Linux (The laptop is an 8 year old laptop after all (Dual Core 1.73 GHz Pentium)). Any suggestions? Or is the LTT Forum going to leave me in the dust?

Upgrade that laptop

that high usage is semi normal someitmes, on my older systems it goes away after a while, on my faster systems its nonexistent.

The svchost does not go away ever. Also my computer lacks the ability to boot from USB? Even when I set the USB ISO priority it still booted from the hard drive.

When you first install windows scvhost uses a lot of power because it is installing all the dozens of drivers for all the hardware of the PC.

This is normal, you're supposed to leave it run for a few hours and it will eventually finish.

If it doesn't finish then you have a bigger problem which is some incompatible hardware or a faulty installation.

TBH i wouldn't use windows on a laptop that old either, get something more lightweight.

What do you use it for, a chromeboook might be a viable option.

do you think I should go ahead and put Linux on it? I can probably use Wine to run Windows exclusives if needed. What do you think my next step should be?

Yeah linux is good. Just might take some time to get all the drivers working.

What linux should I use and what do you mean by getting the drivers working?

Linux isn't like windows where it just detects everything and installs it for you.

And you should probably research different linux distros to find one that is right for you :)
