Bottleneck Issues

You got that right. People seem to have no idea what bottlenecking really means. In your case, your E8400 is the limiting factor in most of your games. Downgrading the GPU would just mean either you'd get worse looking graphics or the graphics card would become the limiting factor (bottleneck). You're not going to get better fps by using a worse graphics card. The CPU is not limiting the GPU's performance, it's limiting the software's (game's) performance. The idea that the CPU somehow "bottlenecks" the GPU (or vice versa) is nonsense.

When it's time to upgrade, don't limit your CPU choice because of your GPU. Get the best CPU you can. Then the GPU may become the bottleneck (until you upgrade it) but there's always something that is the limiting factor (bottleneck).

Im using a Dual Core E8400 at 3.0 ghz (cant overclock because of the cheap motherboard) with a R9 285. And there is a huge bottleneck. I cant upgrade my CPU for a while as i need to upgrade motherboard and ram as well. Im wondering if would get better performance in games with my old HD4850 which doesnt bottleneck obviously. How much does bottleneck affect my game performance.

Does bottlenecked graphics card work worse than a not-bottlenecked terrible card?

And when i upgrade what is the cheapest combo i can get to work great with my graphics card? Computer Parts are really overpriced in Turkey and im just a broke student.

I dont know if my specs will make any difference in the answers but here it is:

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
CPU Fan: ZALMAN CNPS-9500
MB: Gigabyte G41MT-D3
RAM: Kingston 6 GB in total (4+2)

GPU: Sapphire R9 285 DUAL-X OC
PSU: Cooler Master RP-600-PCAR

Sorry about my grammar murdering English its the best i've got :D

Keep using the R9 285. When you're bottlenecked by your CPU it's because it can't keep up with the GPU. Using a worse GPU would only lower your overall framerate. This is because the CPU is no longer held back by the GPU since it's slower.

As far as upgrading goes I would honestly see about upgrading your platform to at least Haswell (socket LGA1150). If that's too expensive in the meantime see if you can snag a cheap used Core 2 Quad off of eBay or locally like a Q6600 or something depending on what your motherboard supports.

I would even look into the FM2+ platform from AMD and see if you can get an 860K or something similar as well if their prices are better in your area.

Nah keep the r9 285

Downgrading your gpu never increases fps

"And when i upgrade what is the cheapest combo i can get to work great with my graphics card?"

I might be missing something, but your gpu isn't usually incompatible with any consumer grade modern board.

To upgrade, the cheapest I'd go is a $110 i3 6100 with a $55 h110 board.

If you spend more and get an Intel cpu now, in the future you could upgrade to an i5/i7 without a mobo change.

else {

 DONT

Thanks for the info and the suggestions :) I thought bottleneck would affect my FPS more than a bad card. There are too much nonsense about bottleneck on the internet..

I will probably go with i3 since i can upgrade it later. And I'll probably get a 775 pin quad core before that :D

i3 6100 + MSI H110M is $194.64

x4 860k + ASUS A68HM-K is $136.08

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

Thanks for the answer. Im limiting my CPU choice becacuse of the money limitations. Thanks everyone you guys helped a lot tbh :D
