Hello there.

I have a problem with my attached Excel files from Outlook 2010. After I install Norton Antivirus. They can not be opened and Excel reporting error , the file is corrupted . It works fine when I open other Excel files in Excel 2010. Hope you can help me.

Add .xls and .xlsx into the exceptions list in Norton. Either that or turn Norton off for this. Then re-download the files.

 

You should know that Excel files can contain macro viruses. If you don't trust the sender, do not open these files. And especially if you haven't backed up the system. Excel macros are very powerful and they can circumvent lot of safeguards. The fact that Norton deems it necessary to modify these files implies there is bad macro code contained in them. It's not like Norton intends to crap all over every file it sees. It does it's best to remove the bad code from them leaving the rest of the file intact. Usually with little luck.

 

Excel and other Office macro viruses were a huge issue back in the nineties. Then they went away for a while. Now they're becoming more and more popular again. Here's some more fear-mongering.
