Looking at building a $500-$600 CAD build. The main goal of the build is for working. I do tons of programming, remote desktop, SSH, lots of copying back and forth from NAS. That sort of thing. I currently use a laptop hooked up to two monitors (17" and 23"). The main problem is that the laptop is bogged down because of all the stuff I throw at it.

The build doesn't need to be beautiful or anything, I don't care if the colours match or not. 16GB and a quad core processor would be a must. A graphics card isn't really needed as I do zero gaming. I also don't need any OS or any peripherals. Only a PC. I am also willing to buy second hand parts off of ebay.ca if that would make the build better. Looking for some guidance!

A Sandy or Ivy Bridge mobo, i5-2400 or i5-2500 (k) CPU, RAM (even if you have to buy brand new).  If you stick to the embedded graphics you could probably re-use an old power supply if you have one kicking around.  I don't see a problem getting that gear together in Canada for well under $600.

You can go into the used market for Sandy Bridge 8 core Xeons:  http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2650-360-2053-2GHz-20MB-8GT-s-SR0KQ-CPU-Server-Processor-/291837479936?hash=item43f2de8c00:g:PboAAOSwimdXo7J7

You will need a GPU with these and the 2011 motherboards are not cheap:  http://www.ebay.ca/itm/HP-Z420-Workstation-Motherboard-LGA-2011-Socket-619557-001-/172286191994?hash=item281d0ea97a:g:XqYAAOSwENxXmRgY#viTabs_0

ECC memory is usually more expensive too.

I don't see why embedded graphics wouldn't hold up. I have used embedded graphics on all other desktops that I have made and they work great.

I like that as well. The only thing is I would need to add a 1TB hard drive probably to be able to store all my stuff.

I like the fact that I can have a 240GB ssd and 1TB hard drive. The ssd will help speed up the computer which will be nice. The only thing I changed is that I went from two 8GB sticks of ram to one 16GB to leave me the option of upgrading in the future if needed. There is also room available to add a GPU later on if I want to.
