This probably sounds stupid, but what do I have to look forward to regarding next generation CPUs? I heard something about Canyonlake or something like that for Intel. Realistically, how far away is that?

Also, is an AMD CPU really worth consideration now or within the next 6 months vs. an i5 6600k or i7 6700k-like competition/options?

I am in such a position that I can wait over a year from today to build my first computer. I have been in the planning stage for roughly 6 months now. Coming from knowing virtually nothing, I see it in my best interest to learn as much about hardware, software, and general part picking before I commit. Whilst at the same time, I like to observe obtainable performance rise and hardware prices fall over that same time.

If the past 6-7 years is any indication, the next generation will be around 5% faster, and use a little bit less electricity than Skylake.  But no major breakthroughs.

Prices seem to have flattened out on CPU's.  I don't see you being at a huge disadvantage if you buy now versus waiting another year, at least on the CPU.  Nvidia GPU's have undergone a major revision change which is currently in heavy demand.

if you are buying a pc, almost always there will be something better out in the near future. So unless it's the day before launch of someting really amazing, it often just fine if you buy what is good, and what you can afford now.
Or you will wait forever.

I make Rainmeter things and other art :D

Cannonlake should still be some time away. Kabylake, on the other hand, should drop by the end of the year; perhaps early 2017 for the desktop SKUs.

All AMD CPUs right now are bad. But, if zen delivers on it's promises (I seriously doubt it, but...) then it would be very compelling to wait.

Here's the thing: there's always something new coming. If you don't have at least a passable PC, buy your stuff now. You could do like I did and wait half a year for Broadwell before getting trolled by Intel. Or you could wait and get lucky; no crystal ball can tell you that.

But if you have the cash now, I suggest Shia Labeufing it.

Yes, that is true with all things. The thing is I can be patience if it is required, but I suppose I am looking for opportunities to wait haha

I learned the hard way. Get what you need to get you going now. If you keep waiting, you'll always keep waiting because there's always something new on the horizon.

Do what you need to do. I waited 3 years because I kept telling myself "Oh there will be better stuff next year if I wait". However, that mindset got me nowhere. Just go for it even though your wallet may not be the happiest afterwards...

I was in the same situation as yourself. Had a 2009 iMac 21" for about 4 years before I said screw it and built my rig. No point in constantly waiting.

Im just waiting for next year ZEN to see if AMD finally stepped their game. 8000 series is at least 4-5 years old now, thats a massive gap and total domination from Intel. Next gen Intel CPU wont be much faster than current but next gen AMD CPU should be hella faster than previous (I dont count 9000, thats just insanely OCed 8000 anyway...)

New mobos will come out with the 200 chipset. Or you could purchase a second hand mobo with updated Bios. Or get cheap celeron (used one) just for the sake of updating it and then reselling.

Alternatively, buy a PC now and get a cheaper SKU, for later upgrading to Kaby.
