Oh and another thing. Depending on the kind of server you're looking to run and the sort of information you're running on it, it may be beneficial to look into ECC memory. This is usually a bit more expensive than standard non-ECC memory, but in some situations where information security is critical its worth the investment.

Just buy an older dual socket 2011 board and get two xeon 2670's off ebay for $70 each. Huge amounts of processing.

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.

Id get a used dell r720. There fast and have many features that you can't have in a diy server. (much more dense, good impi/drac, hostswap psu, info lcd on the front, 24dimms, support for things like esxi and nvidia grid, cheap parts)
