Finally going to be building a pc after saving for a year during a job before uni. Decided on the potential longevity of the shiny new 1070 but I am stuck as to whether I should go for a 144Hz 1080p monitor (not sure if there are any decent UW 144Hz 1080p out there). Or go for a 1440p monitor which sounds great but then there's the issue with refresh rate; ultra wide 60/100Hz or standard size high refresh rate. But since it probably won't reach 100fps on cranked settings.... Since I'm going to be studying for a few years I won't be able to buy anything new for some time so need to buy a monitor which I'll be able to run new AAA games on the high settings for some time. Help much apppreciated.

At 1080p, the 1070 will last for 4-5 years at least maxed out. At 1440p, maybe 3-4 years maxed.

What CPU are you going to be using? If you are only using an i5, get a 60hz monitor as the i5's have a hard time with 144hz monitors and not going 100% utilization.

If you want a ultrawide gaming monitor the BenQ XR3501 could be an option

as it has 1080p with 144Hz but it's expensive.

You can also get the Dell S2716DG which is a 27" 1440p monitor at 144Hz.

It's imo the best monitor you can get for that price. It also has G-Sync on top of that.

One thing I'm not sure about when it comes to fps and refresh rate is what happens when the monitor is at 144Hz or 100Hz or something like that and your frame rate is around 70-80 fps what happens then. Does the image look choppy or something?

Nope, especially if you have G-Sync/Freesync. At 30-40 FPS things are going to get choppy.

I am actually in the exact same situation you are, I also can't decide which route to go. I want 1440p + G-Sync + 144hz, but the prices... The days are over when a monitor was just a "minor" upgrade for like $200-$300...

Luckily I think the 1070 won't drop to that fps at 1440p from what I've read. :)

probably will bite the bullet and spend the extra. Will look that much nicer and would want to properly push my card. 1080p seems like a waste for the card except if you play competitive fps games. I don't so not an issue.
