While building my first system, i was going to install the motherboard into the case and can't for the life of me get the I/O to match up with the shield. I have the Asus z170-a motherboard and the small metal prongs on the I/O shield are constantly catching on the motherboard as I try to slide it into place. I was wondering are they supposed to be cut off? bent outwards then back in? Are they even necessary/ give any benefits?

With small cases with small playroom, this is common. Try getting out the I/O shield, but it into the MoBO, than try to install the MoBo like this. Right before you screw everything in place, pop in the shield, and you shoud be fine. If problem still remains, post pictures and let us better understand your issue.

So click it into the motherboard I/O then before screwing the mobo in, push the mobo so that the shield clicks in?

Certianly not. Let me explain it again, step by step.

  1. If you already installed the IO shield to the case, get it out
  2. carefully place the IO shield onto the MoBo's IO, where it would normally go.
  3. Insert the MoBO with the shield on it into the case.
  4. now that the shield is in place, carefully press THE SHIELD to pop it into the case where it belongs
  5. after this, you should be able to screw in the MoBo without any issues

if the issue remains, please upload pictures for us to better understand your situation.
