Advice needed for upgrade

broseph

Hi everyone,

I built the PC I have at the moment early 2013, and has started struggling to run more modern games, but I have been too scared to look at upgrading since - as I am fairly inexperienced with computers. The components currently are:

Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme 4M

RAM: 8gb (2x4gb) Ripjaws DDR3

GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 670

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770k

HDD: 128gb SSD (boot drive)

Power Supply: Corsair VS650

(Please let me know if you need more information, I'm not sure how much you need to know)

I am looking to upgrade and would greatly appreciate any advice you could give. I don't really have a strict budget - I'm mainly concerned with performance, however if this could be achieved at a lower price point, that would be ideal. I have keyboard+mouse+screen sorted, its just the tower I want to upgrade. I was considering buying a new Geforce GTX 1070 and more RAM, but I'm not sure if its compatible with my current motherboard, and if it might be overkill? Cheers.

You should just upgrade your graphics card, and maybe get a cooler, if you don't already one....
But you need to let me know how much you want to spend on the graphics card, so i can recommend you some sites/prices..

And get an HDD for you data storage..

Everything is pretty decent.

And for the ram you could get another Dual Channel Kit like the one you have now.., but exactly the same

Just get a 1070. You will get to enjoy significantly better performance.

I'm happy to spend anywhere up to around $1-2k, budget isn't really an issue. As for the cooler, do you mean like a heat sink over the CPU?

edit: I live in Australia, so thats $1000-$2000 AUD, (so approximately 3 US cents right now) and I might be limited as to which parts I can buy.

Yeah, or maybe even an water cooled instead of the normal heatsink cooler.

You could easily get an gtx 1080 witch is somewhere around 850$ to 900$-ish

You can look right here and pick one, but i recommend a Gigabyte/EVGA/ASUS brand.. now i don't really know which is actually the best but i can assure you that it will be a great experience with this graphics card

Look up above about the graphics card...
And here: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Extreme-Performance-Liquid-Cooler/dp/B019EXSSBG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470321492&sr=8-1&keywords=corsair+h100i+v2+liquid+cpu+cooler

Standard water cooler but very effective, i mean you can get like some with tubbing and pump, and things like that..

I think here are some more cheaper variants for gtx 1080 http://pcpartpicker.com/products/video-card/

Alright, and you don't think there will be any trouble powering the card with my current power supply, or compatibility issues with the motherboard?

Power i'm checking that right now, but if you want to overclock much, then you need a better motherboard

That power supply should be good for the moment you can check that by yourself http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/

Nope your fine even with the 1080. At which resolution are you gaming at? I may also consider a larger SSD for more fast access to games.

I'm running 1920x1080 with my current screen, and SSD sounds good, what brand would you recommend?

I'm making a list of all the thing you'll need on PCPartPicker, and i'll check how much 2$k means in your money :)

Here's something

You can pick other type of video card as well, but i prefer Gigabyte the most for their cooling

I can help you with that to, if you want

Upgrade the PSU, the Corsair VS is cheap, nasty and not good enough.

Replace it with an EVGA G2, GS, GQ, Anything from Seasonic or XFX (Excluding the XT).

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/19762/  - $109

A larger SSD is always a good thing:

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35620/ - $159

A GTX 1070 is a nice upgrade

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35920/ $699

8GB of more ram is also nice

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/27404/ $59

$930

Would the 1080 be worth the price increase? (at my local parts shop, Geforce GTX 1070 is $699 AUD, and the 1080 is $1259 AUD). Because if the 1070 works almost as good, I'll probably go with your advice and get that.

You could get the 1080 or the 1070 but here it comes the pricing and all of that, now how do you prefer, but first do more digging on the internet and see if it is worth it to get the 1080 or just the 1070

I won't look up to those titles because i can afford them..
I can afford only a gtx 960 4gb strix

IMO, the enthusiast hardware is not worth getting. The  RX 480 to GTX 1070 is the price to performance sweet spot (Not saying the RX 480 and GTX 1070 are equal, they are 2 different tiers), anything more and you have the enthusiast tax, anything less and you have the cheapskate tax.
