Surveillance system

Hi,

i´m trying to build a surveillance system for my house. But atm i have some questions.

1. Do you need ECC RAM? (Linus didn´t use it either in his surveillance server)

2. Do you have to run WD Purples in Raid 1?

3. What cameras would you guys recommend?

1) not at all, its just recommended

2) No, thats only for redundancy (back ups) and I would use purple or another server grade drive

3)thats a matter of your budget and needs(quality, wireless, motor, ftp, poe, etc)

Which software should i use? pay those 60$ for unraid or is freeNAS sufficient?

I would assume freenas would work fine, but I'd wait for someone with more experience than I to answer that. I know if you just want to save the video to the server, then its freenas will work, I don't know if the others offer any advantage here though.

If you're wanting to use this rig to view and manage the camera you could use Ubuntu or a typical desktop/work station OS. NAS OSs are good, but you can build Ubuntu to have smba, ftp, and the other functions.
