possible dead Active Display Adapter?

I'm going to make this as short as possible, I'm running 3 monitors and as needed, I have an active display adapter. the problem I am now having is that out of the blue, the monitor that is connected via the adapter switches resolutions to a much lower one. In case it matters it is a DisplayPort to VGA adapter (Don't kill me for VGA, it's a long story). I am assuming that it is just the adapter because after unplugging it and replugging it a few times it works fine.

I would say that it's very likely the adapter. I've had a couple of those fail on me in a similar manner.
