So I am planning on acquiring a gpu around Christmas and AMD's new lineup looks pretty compelling.

AMD_Volcanic_Islands_R7_R9_Pictured_Wide

Originally I was gonna go for the 280x, but then I got to thinking. Wouldn't I see better performance if I crossfired 2 r7 260x vs r9 280x? Plus I would be getting that new audio support if I went with the lower end costs. On top of that I'll save a few bucks. Would the crossfire give me performance that's at least on par with the 280x? I realize I can't get a real answer just yet, but I was wondering what everyone else would think about this idea.

Don't get a CF of weaker GPUs, get the strongest single GPU you can afford. If you CF now, you will limit yourself (you can't add another in a few years), not all games support CF, etc.

I'm quite sure it would outperform a R9-280X, but the 280X is only 300$, you're best to get it and then, in a few years, get another one in CF to give your PC some new life :P

CF< single GPU, some games dont support it, not always a big difference, go for 1 gpu, save yourself some hassle

Find cheapest Radeon 7970 you can find with reliable cooler from reliable manufacturer and don't look back, 280x is exactly the same card. Not worth the price premium. Get 7970 while it's cheap.

That's a 7950

It has a 7970 board. MSI tends to do that too.

Never crossfire low power cards. cross firing anything below mid range is just kinda iffy. Only time you should start trying to crossfire or sli is in that 7950 and 660ti range and up just for an example.

When I get the money ill be getting a R7 260x as a replacement from my HD 6970 in my workstation. I don't game on that computer and the 6970 produces a crap ton of heat even when not gaming. plus i can then down the wrok station to a quieter psu.

Work Station:: Cooler Master Storm Trooper // i7-3930K @ 3.9 GHz // Asus Sabertooth X79 // Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4X4GB) 1600 MHz // Cooler Master 1200W Gold // Xonar Essence STX // Radeon HD 6970 // Avermedia HD Live Gamer Pro

Well, every 7970 is at least $299.  GHz editions are still $349+.  Those prices probably won't drop much.  280X is basically a 7970GHz (turbos up to 1000MHz) so you might as well get the newer card.

I doubt you searched well. Even in Europe (Poland to be specific) i've found 7970 at 250€ last week and it's still on sale.
