Hello.

I've just got a spare server that I would like to play with. My problem is that I live in a two story house and I wouldn't want the server to be in my room. The best place for the server would be on the opposite side of the house from my room (the modem is in my room).

Now, our house is wired with phone cable (RJ11). Could I use these cables as normal ethernet cables ? In that case, what kind of adapters/devices would I need?

Don't think it's possible since each ethernet cable (RJ45) are rated differently. So I'm assuming that the way it's wired inside the cable matters.

Okey... How about coax cables? Every room in the house is also wired with coax cables.
But would the fact that I'm receiving the internet connection from the ISP via coax be a problem?

This would be my plan:

ISP -> coax -> Coax splitter -> Fritz!Box 6360 -> Ethernet to Coax adapter -> Back into the same coax jack -> "Server room" -> Coax to Ethernet adapter -> Server

Dunno if that'll work, I think you would shove ethernet down all the coax ports, and maybe even further than your house... Unless you have two coax connectors (not with a splitter, two separate wires going to the splitter thing where all the coax cables are connected in your house) and you can rewire one of them to connect only to the server room.

So you would basically have it like this:

ISP -> Big coax splitter where the line going into your house also plugs into -> coax jack 1 -> Modem

Modem -> Eth to Coax adapter -> coax jack 2 -> Connected directly to the cable going to server room (neither of them going into the big splitter) -> Coax to eth adapter -> Server
