Schiit Stack v2 Randomly Stopped Working

Go to solution Solved by radmiral,

Yep. I'm officially an idiot.  Was using the wrong wall wart.

Hey guys!

Been searching around google like a madman trying to find a solution to my audio problem i'm having.

I recently moved and had to unplug my schiit stack from my pc in order to move it. (obviously)

However, whenever I plugged it back in, it doesn't work anymore!  Windows still recognized the DAC as USB Modi Device and shows the levels rising but there is no output.

The amp and dac were kept very safely in the move and there is no way they could have been damaged.  I have also tried another PC and the dumb thing still is not working.

Any idea what on earth could have happened?  Could a faulty USB cable still let the device show as connected but fail to produce sound?

Thanks!

EDIT: I have also tried installing drivers from the Schiit website to no avail.  I am baffled.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Is the source on the Modi by any chance been changed away from USB?

I have made that mistake in the past.

Of course, this assumes you're using the Uber model.

I'm not using the Uber model.  Although there is a switch on the back labeled E and S.  Standard and Expert mode I think is what it's for.  I've tried both. Doesn't change anything. Pretty frustrating.

EDIT: But if you're asking if I've changed the PC I'm using in anyway,  the answer is no.

Have you identified which part is the one creating a problem?

I.E. have you plugged the Modi into some other than the Magni, and have you feed the Magni from a source that isn't the Modi?

I have not.  I don't really have a lot of options to do so.  Could I just connect the magni to my pc and try it that way? I don't know how else I could test the Modi.  I'm kind of an audio noob.  (Sorry!)

There is no need to be sorry. We all have to start somewhere.

The Magni you could just connect to your PC with a RCA -to-TRS cable. You don't have to do extensive listning. You just have to check if it out puts or not.

The Modi is  a bit more tricky to test, since you would need to connect it to a different amp to check if it outputs.

Although, you could connect a pair of headphones with a RCA-to-3,5mm jack connector.

Or you could get a multimeter and measure the voltage coming out. The Modi should output around 2v.

Another thing, have you tried changing out the cables used in the setup?

Also, and this is going to sound patronizing as fuck, but have you set the Modi as your default playbacl device in Windows?

I have set the Modi as the default playback device.  Haha.

As for the cables you are asking me to change out, I could see if I have any space RCA cables laying around.  Could the usb cable be the problem?  Even though windows detects the Modi?  I have also tried every single usb 2.0 port on my pc.

I am asking you to change out the cables, since that would atleast eliminate that as the culprit.

While it is unlikely, it could be the USB cable that are causing the problem. There could be a lose data connection or the cable might not supply enough power.

This might be a really dumb question, but why would I need a RCA to TRS cable to test the Magni?  Could I not use a RCA to 3.5mm cable to connect to my PC then connect the headphones to the Magni?

We are talking about the same cable.

A 3.5mm is just the size of a normal TRS connector.

And just so we're 100% in the clear, it's this kind of cable you need
