Which direction to go?

I have an 1150 i5 @ 4.5ghz with a 30" led tv 1080p.

 

Option 1:  My friend is selling me his 970 for $150.  Reference gpu with all the metal and aluminum crap.  Works great actually.  OCs to 1,480mhz before it cries uncle.  I can buy the card and get a 1440p monitor.  I don't know if the 970 will handle 1440p well.

 

Option 2:  Not buy his 970 but buy a 1070 instead.  More than enough muscle for 1080p and I'm assuming 1070 will kick the ass of 1440p.  However, spending nearly $500 for a gpu, that 1440p monitor will have to wait longer.  1070 shouldn't even break a sweat with a 1080p tv.

 

1440p monitors are still around $300 + $150 970 = $450.

1070 = $450.

Get a 1070.

Or you can consider finding a 980Ti as well if it's way cheaper.

The 1070 G1 Gaming for $429 is quite good.

The EVGA and MSI pricing is abit steep.

 

This route will give you a very powerful GPU. Just save up abit more and upgrade monitor later.
