You're definitely not going to have a 17" convertible. However, looking at Newegg, the only $500 17" notebook is a Dell with HD4000. It won't play games, and I'll suggest waiting for Haswelll prices to go down

Need more storage. it would be my main machiene

The only problem you run into is pricing.

There might be a 128gb tablap hybrid but those are double your budget as far as I know. The one I linked is pretty cheap so I suggest grabbing a 2TB external HDD for around $100. Also shop around some more and you can probably get a nicer one. Higher res, win8, more RAM, etc...

I found these two which seem to be fairly good deals. The APUs should allow you to play games at OK settings, better than anything Intel could offer for similar prices.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834257400 Refurbished, has a better CPU/GPU though and an extra 250GB of hard drive space.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314228 New, not as good CPU/GPU, less hard drive space, claims up to 4.5 hours of battery life.

If you don't mind getting a refurbished, you'll definitely get better performance with the HP, not sure how battery performance compares though.

Well you're not going to be able to find very many new laptops with anything but Windows 8. Once you buy a laptop you could format the hard drive and install a different version of Windows or Linux.

Sorry. My bad.

This laptop uses an APU so CPU taskes may not be that great, but the GPU kicksass. http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=83175&vpn=NX%2EMCTAA%2E003&manufacture=Acer
