This is my first AIO, is it normal that the backplate is a little loose? Will it tighten up when I actually secure the block?

Once you bolt the waterblock on it shouldn't move around really at all, if it does you may want to look into the washer mod if it doens't apply enough mounting pressure.

Yep no movement, but I just installed the damn thing upside down. Really don't want to remove it and waste the default thermal paste...

It's best to always replace thermal paste when you remove it as it can introduce some air bubbles but if you really don't want to go out and get some you could just rotate it. As mentioned though a tube of thermal paste isn't very expensive.
