55 degrees idle?

I am not that experienced with PCs compared to many of you so looking for some advice. My i5-4670K at stock speeds is running at 50-55 degrees idle. I have the Coolermaster 212 air cooler which has served me well. It used to run at 28 idle, now it's close to double that. Can anyone offer some advice as to why this may be the case and what I can do.

Specs:

HAF X

i5-4670K 3.4GHz

GTX 780 Ti: Evga SC w/ ACX

32GB RAM

Gigabyte Z87X-D3H

My GPU is also running at the same sort of temps idle, when looking at reviews it should be about 20 degrees less. Incidentally my hard drives are both running 50 degrees which I don't think is right...

Any advice? cheers

Sounds like poor airflow in your case. Have you changed anything or confirmed all your case fans are operating correcrtly?

Oh, duh, I should have thought about that. The massive fan on the side is disconnected as the power cables can't reach to it. I can't remember if its always been this way.

btw, this is a graph of my CPU usage. it seems a bit strange given that all I am actively using is Chrome, with some basic apps in background like Bullguard and Steam.

try reapplying thermal paste

Reapplying thermal paste is likely not going to affect anything in this instance since it was sudden and not gradual and is affecting his gpu as well..thus the case airflow seems to be null and void. This is where he should start to ensure he has good ample airflow through the case. The massive side fan..is that the only air intake for the case?

Depending on where you are in the world you might want to consider the ambient temp in the room also being a factor, for instance here in the UK right now it's hitting approx 24-30C and therefore the ambient temp has gone up by about 6-12C from 2 weeks ago... Therefore the case/cpu etc temp has also risen a bit.

Yeah that is no doubt a factor compared to a few months ago. The thing is though, I have noticed for several weeks now that my PC heats up my room while idle and that's regardless of whether it's a hot or cold day.

There are 3 other fans.

I have upped my fan speed to 70% from 40%. CPU is now around 40-45, GPU is hovering around 50, and my HDDs have come down to around 40.

Yea sounds just like the ambient air getting stagnent inside your case with the hot summer.

It's probably worth applying some new thermal paste, as I haven't altered the CPU in 3 years - that might do some good. But I think you may be right @legacy99, given all my components are hotter than they should be, it's a system-wide problem. Next weekend I'll give the rig a good clean, and try and get the case fan working. I have a feeling that the fan used to work and has since broken but honestly, as I never look at it, I can't remember.

What's the best way of de-dusting components? Dusting cloth? Compressed air? Rubber blower?

I personally have an electronic duster vac that i use but a good can or 2 of air with some alcohol and qutips to clean the dust off the fan fins. If its been 3+ years its a good possibility that it may be dried up. May want to do the gpu as well while at it.
