Ok so I was thinking of a couple different ideas and don't know which one would turn out the best. So I currently use a Corsair H115i to cool my CPU and I have the Intel 5820k over clocked to 4.5ghz, the H115i does a decent job of keeping it cool, but I would rather it sit below 60° under load, but I think last I checked I was running closer to 70to73ish while on full load that is, which is actually perfectly fine imo, I would just personally like it cooler lol. The setup I wanted to try out was

Well #1 would have to be upgrade my PSU lol, I was looking at THIS EVGA SuperNOVA 1300, then after I have enough power to even do whst I want to do lol. I want to use two of THESE Potted Peltier Pads (250w of power each), one on each side (it is a 280mm Radiator so I mean like one under each fan, so NOT like one sandwich another) of my radiator. I have my radiator setup with four fans on it, so two pushing and two pulling (4 fans total), and on the side I want to put these pads I will have a 10mm gap between Peltier pad and fan and I would place a 5mm thick copper heat sink directly to the pad, and then a 5mm thick aluminum heat sink on top of the copper heat sink. Basically as im sure you're aware copper is better on a direct constant heat source, BUT aluminum actually dissipates heat better, so my thoughts were to use the copper to pull the constant heat and the aluminum to try and dissipate the heat. Although I may be better off using a 10mm copper heat sink lol, thats one thing I would like some suggestions on. Then what I wanted to do was, if THAT works out well, I wanted to do the same thing out on my graphics cards radiator.  The only thing about that is, I ended up having to use a 140mm radiator for my graphics card (with one fan pushing, one fan pulling. So 2 fans total), so this is another thing I was "on the fence" about I guess you can call it lol. With the 140mm radiator I can get away with puttin two Peltier pads on still on one side still since the pads are only 50mm × 50mm, but would I be better off only putting ONE pad on? I just don't want to create so much heat that I can dissipate with the heat sinks, blah blah blah lol cant really explain what I mean there, but doesn't really matter just want to know what YOU think so doesn't really matter what I think lol.

Ok so now that you heard all that whats your take on it? I would obviously be putting the Peltier pads on the side of the radiator with the pull fans so im not pushing hot air/heat into the darn radiator and making the whole thing counter intuitive but I am still just not sure about it basically because I've never seen anyone do it before lol.

Let me know your thought.

Happy Gaming  (or Porning, or whatever it is you like to do!),

Rich

I'm not sure how your going to properly interface between the rad and the peliter but what's going to happen is if it goes sub ambient is your rad and heatsinking will start to condensate or freeze. Not to mention this is very inefficient for cooling, if you just want lower temps that are still above ambient a custom loop with lots of rad space would allow for that.

Yea, I plan on a custom loop, just don't have the funds for it right now, my buddy has a buddy with a EVGA 1300  I was going to trade one of my art projects for, so this setup would only cost me like what $100 or so, even cheaper if I used cheap pads like THIS from SparkFun, would be a  $30 fix hehe. But yea I maybe better just waiting.  I am just not that kinda person. I have ADHD and mild OCD on top of other crap lol. It makes it hard to learn, read and focus BUT I also have a super hard time taking my mind off something I want done lol, so I'll constantly think about how I can get it done. Although it helps me in ways like inventing, art, creatively,  etc. Because im constantly thinking, it also sucks when it comes to small things...... Like cooling a CPU that currently has sufficient cooling, lol. I'm always up for trying something new tho!

Have a good one,

The plan for taking that heat away was the heatsinks I mentioned.  I have a ton of options around here, like old cpu coolers I have a those short copper sinks with fins like in this picture. Or I have just regular old heatsinks in a bunch of different sizes and thickness like THIS. If i put them directly to the pads the pad will still cool the radiator but both the air coming through and the air pulling it should be enough to keep the heat moving. I think anyways lol

Oh check this out even, i can grab a  few of these and wires all 3 to like a molex or something lol. Sorry like I said,  VERY hard to get the mind off it lol

Edit: nvm on those for this project anyway.  The fans would be going in the wrong direction. But those would be great to use on the Peltier for other projects!

You would need much larger heatsinks as the hot side gets very hot, and multiple of the small peliter units as a very rough approximation you need almost double the cooling to just keep the temps low. Are you thinking of doing this as a replacement for a rad cause while possible your going to need to monitor things very closely to ensure it doesn't cool the fluid too much or get too hot to the point where the cooling side warms up, a bit of a balancing act almost.

While I've seen a loop done with a hot and cold side using i think it was 5 or so pelitiers I wouldn't put it on the same PSU as the system just for peace of mind sake. This here was a good proof of concept in terms of what could be done on the cheap:

Yea thats a neat video actually but not how I was thinking about doing it. I basically just wanted to throw them onto the radiator itself to just help boost cooling. Basically it would help cool the water MORE as the water ran through the radiator,  so it would basically come out the other side cooler than it would have without the Peltiers.

The main issue is how it would make contact with the rad as just strapping it onto the fin array won't facilitate very good heat transfer to the rad and fluid itself.

you would be better off putting a couple extra CPU blocks in the loop that are connected to the peltier coolers. Putting the cooler on the radiator will do next to nothing. They are designed to cool by radiation not conduction.

Once you get below ambient temp the radiator is going to be hurting your temps not helping.. plus you need to really worry about condensation
