CPU vs GPU

go with the i5 but save up for a 1060 or 480. i'm assuming you're sticking with 1080p 60fps?

To be honest, I'm still going for the i3.

Even if it has two cores, it's got better single core performance due to the higher clock speed.

Unless you're going to wait and get a higher end i5, I'd say just get the i3. It'll functionally work the same in most environments for gaming. A higher end i5 would give you a bit more security, but if that's NEVER going to be an option, then I say i3.

Maybe I'm just an idiot though.

The i5 is still over 65% more powerful even with lower clockspeed. 2 cores are MUCH better than hyper threading

A lot of modern games don't even boot on 2 cores

They do with 2 cores with HT, but many of them are playing really poorly then.

HT negates that but the i3 is still weaker than I'd like.

Far Cry 4 was one, there were 2 more that came afterwards I believe. People tried to run on the G3258 and it flat out didn't work

And then games like GTA V, Witcher 3, FO4 and such stutter badly on dual-cores without HT

Oh. I just looked at the price, and they aren't that much different. I suppose the i5 would be the better value then. I thought the i3 was like $110 CAD, must've been confusing it with something else. x-x

i5 6500 is better value as it's a 3.2GHz CPU vs the 6400 which is a 2.7GHz one. Difference is 15%
