I am trying to build my first pc. I dont really want to go into over clocking or too much water cooling. I have a spreadsheet with what I have so far and it would be great if someone could help me out with either just reviewing what i have and saying what i'm doing wrong/right or to point me in an entirely new direction. Thanks.

1. Use PC part picker.ca (I'm assuming you are in Canada) because it is much easier and is the standered way to build PCs on this forum.

2. Before I can help you make decisions, I need to know your budget and what you are using your computer for (gaming, video editing, web surfing, etc.) so I can give you feedback that you can use.

3. Welcome to the Forum! And if you have any questions reply to this post or tag me with @SCGazelle

To address the PDF (Im going to advise you what will give you the best performance disregarding price)

1. CPU - i7 6700k

2. MoBo - Get a different one, it would have to be z170 to be able to overclock the 6700k

3. RAM - Whichever one looks cooler to you

4. Storage - If we are being practical: 120gb. M.2; 240gb. SSD; 1tb. WD blue

5. GPU - Don't get that GPU, there are better options for that price point.

6. PSU - Neither

7. Cooling - Liquid Cooling will allow for more over-clock-ability.

8. Respond to my 1st post so I can properly advise you

Hello. thankyou for your help. My budget is about $1200 and gaming and video editing are the main things that i would be using it for.

P.S. I am indeed in Canada

  • If you don't feel comfortable overclocking I would go for the 6700. If you are planning to a bit more then go for the 6700k. If you only plan to do occasional video editing go for the 6500 or 6600k, again depending on whether you want to OC or not, although I reccomend you do.
  • If you plan to stick with a locked processor, stick with the b150, if Yu really want, although I reccomend you go up to a mATX form factor and a h170 chipset. If you want to OC then get a z170 board.
  • Really go for whatever memory you like the look of. I can vouch for the hyper X but it really won't bother you
  • Your storage is a bit weird. I would ditch the m.2 drive and go for a larger sata drive. Maybe a 480/500gb one. I reccomend the 500gn 850vo. I reckon go for the 2tb drive if you are working with video. I would go for a black drive over a red one though.
  • Don't get the 380. Rather, go for the 480. Similar price, much better preformance. If you want to spend a little more, the 1060 and 1070 are a bit better, however all are good picks.
  • Go for the sprecre pro model of fans
  • dont bother with liquid cooling unless you plan to go enthusiast grade with somthing like an open loop AIO or a custom loop. I reckon look at an air cooler like the BeQuiet pure rock or noctua nhd14. The latter will preform as well as liquid

I dont really want to go into overclocking. I would rather make a pc I know is reliable and won't have to maintain constantly. so if overclocking is out any advice.

Alright. Here is what I would get for that price point:

PCPartPicker part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/DjTXPs
Price breakdown by merchant: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/DjTXPs/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($249.98 @ DirectCanada)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG M9i 48.4 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI B150 Gaming M3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($134.99 @ DirectCanada)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($44.99 @ DirectCanada)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($110.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($59.99 @ Canada Computers)
Case: NZXT S340 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($99.98 @ NCIX)
Power Supply: XFX XT 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($84.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Other: GTX 1060 ($300.00)
Total: $1085.89
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Note:

1. The GTX 1060 was just released so you can pick one up at Nvidia or wait for aftermarket coolers which will perform better (in theory) which should come soon.

I managed to fit an i7-6700 / GTX 1060 / 16GB RAM / 240GB SSD for $1200 CAD without skimping too much on the other parts.

PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($394.98 @ DirectCanada)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($36.98 @ DirectCanada)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($62.99 @ NCIX)
Memory: Kingston FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($80.99 @ NCIX)
Storage: PNY CS1311 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($81.22 @ DirectCanada)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($62.98 @ DirectCanada)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SC GAMING Video Card  ($350.00)

^Note that most of the gtx 1060's are out of stock atm but should be restocked shortly. Prices are between $329-399
Case: Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case  ($49.98 @ DirectCanada)
Power Supply: Corsair CXM 550W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($58.98 @ NCIX)
Total: $1179.10 ($1189.10-$10 rebate) / Selected from just 2 merchants for lesser fees and easier shipping.

If that's too much here's how you can cut the price down.

1. Save ~$75 by going for an RX 480 4GB (around $270-280) instead of the 1060. Still a beast 1080p gaming card.

2. Save ~$120 by downgrading from i7 to the i5-6600.

3. Save $35 by removing the cpu cooler and sticking with the stock which is still okay.

Unlike AMD, Nvidia aftermarket variants are already available on day 1. All are sold out as well. xD

Thank you for your help. It is much appreciated and will be taken heavily when finally deciding what to get. I'm not in any rush to decide and I like research so I will look for the best prices and new products.
